24 Aug 2013

It is with great sorrow and sadness that I must share with you the tremendous family loss that we are experiencing at the farm. On Sunday, August 18th, 2013, my magnificent mother-in-law, Peggy, passed away from this world.

Peggy was the matriarch…the glue of the family farm here at Dunmoylan. She will be desperately missed.

Peggy walked through her life with gentleness and grace…..whether in the farmyard, her kitchen, with family, or socially. She, as many have expressed in their sympathy this week, “was a real lady.”

As many who have followed this blog for some time will know, Peggy lovingly taught me a thing or two about cooking, baking, and preserving. I learned so much from Peggy over the years, but probably most profoundly, she inspired me to simply be a better person; to always put your best foot forward.

Out of respect for my family, this site will stay silent until we gather for the traditional Month’s Mind in September.

Slan Abhaile,

{I will share the recipe for black currant lemon verbena glazed pie + announce the winning entry for Nessa’s book in my next posting}

    Imen, I”m so sorry for your loss. I know it will be a great transition, and the beginning of a new season in life for you as a woman as well, as the traditions & flame are passed from one generation to the next. I know you will do her memory great justice, and my heart goes out to you in yours in your mourning. Much love, Beth

    My sincere condolences. I baked Peggy’s apple tart for my own mother (who grew up next door in Co. Clare) and she said it was the best she ever tasted. Every time I bake brown bread I think of my mother, aunts and their mothers. In baking the same bread they baked for generations, I feel that I carry a bit of them with me. You have shared Peggy with all of your readers, even people like me whom you have never met. I will think of her too when I bake that tart.

    “If Tears Could Build A Stairway”

    If tears could build a stairway,
    and memories a lane.
    I would walk right up to Heaven
    and bring you back again.

    No farewell words were spoken,
    No time to say “Goodbye”.
    You were gone before I knew it,
    and only God knows why.

    My heart still aches with sadness,
    and secret tears still flow.
    What it meant to love you –
    No one can ever know.

    But now I know you want me
    to mourn for you no more;
    To remember all the happy times
    life still has much in store.

    Since you’ll never be forgotten,
    I pledge to you today~
    A hollowed place within my heart
    is where you’ll always stay.
